MAPPING THE INVISIBLE

Anita Schmid’s abstract pastel paintings arise from a profound and ongoing mystical journey, deeply rooted in her desire to explore the hidden dimensions of existence and consciousness. Her work moves beyond mere representation, creating visual languages that bridge the visible and the invisible, the material and the spiritual. Each painting is both an act of discovery and communication—a way to translate inner visions, subtle energies, and states of consciousness into forms that can be shared, felt, and remembered. Her practice can be understood as a form of Transcendental Translation: giving tangible form to transcendent experiences.

Working in series, Schmid develops interconnected groups of paintings that form visual constellations. Each piece resonates with the others, unfolding like chapters in a story, reflecting her ongoing search for meaning and understanding of the universe from a mystical perspective. These paintings are not isolated objects but parts of a larger dialogue, embodying processes of transformation, growth, and renewal. They act as portals to the unconscious, where inner landscapes—diagrams of thought, energy, and feeling—are brought into form and invite viewers to experience what often remains hidden.

Her creative process is deeply meditative, a state in which body and mind attune to an inner rhythm. Guided by an intuitive, vital, feminine force, her gestures emerge as deliberate yet organic expressions of energy. Spirals, circles, and geometric motifs echo universal structures, while instinctive color choices gradually build in intensity, shifting between soft harmonies and bold contrasts. This interplay embodies the polarities of existence—light and dark, stillness and movement, fragility and strength—and mirrors the balance inherent in the natural world. Nature serves as both inspiration and mirror, with organic patterns and feminine forms celebrating both beauty and mystery.

Recurring motifs such as the spiral and golden ratio underscore life’s inherent spiraling nature, symbolizing transformation, energy flow, and ongoing metamorphosis. Much like a spiral, life is in constant movement, reminding us that change is the only constant and that through continual transformation we grow, evolve, and create new balance.

At its essence, Schmid’s work is about connection. It weaves together body and spirit, science and mysticism, individuality and universality. Each painting becomes an offering—a bridge toward transcendence, a reminder of the unseen forces moving through us, and an invitation to experience the sacredness of change. Her art is at once deeply personal and universally resonant: a mystical translation of life itself, endlessly unfolding in spirals of color, form, and light.
